The FAQ
About the Movement
What is the For Farmers Movement?
The For Farmers Movement connects people directly to hardworking farmers through nominations, storytelling, and small grants that support real needs on real farms.
Why focus on small and mid-sized farms?
These farms play a critical role in local food systems but often operate with limited financial flexibility. Even modest funding can make a meaningful difference. These are the farms we have funded so far.
What problem does the Movement address?
Small farms face increasing economic and operational pressures. We help ensure they are seen, supported, and able to continue feeding their communities.
Nominations
What does it mean to nominate a farmer?
Nominations recognize farmers that are doing great work within their communities. They make farmers feel seen and also help to connect them to ongoing grant opportunities and support.
Who can nominate a farmer?
Anyone can nominate a farmer — a farmer you know, buy from, or admire. If you don't know a farmer (yet), you can nominate one from our list of over 1,500 farmers. You can share ths nomination link with your community.
Can farmers nominate themselves?
Yes. But the nominations process is a good way for farmers to engage their communities to get involved in their farms in a meaningful and productive way.
Grants
What do farmer grants support?
Grants support practical needs such as tools, equipment, repairs, infrastructure, and improvements that help farms operate more effectively. Here are the projects we have supported.
How much are the grants?
Most grants range from $500 to $1,000, with more for collaborative grants. Transformational grants are by invitation only and range from $5000 to $10,000.
How are farmers selected?
A team of reviewers (farmers and non-farmers) review every application and select the best project proposals based on impact, feasibility, and benefit to the farm and community.
Where do grant funds come from?
Grant funding comes from individual supporters who contribute to farmer grants, donor advised funds (DAFs) and some family foundations. Support farmer grants

What is Friend of a Farmer?
Friend of a Farmer is a membership group of non-farmers only where a quarterly fee of $25 gives members the opportunity to direct a $1000 grant to a farmer of their choice. You can invite your non-farmer friends to join.
What are the Friend of a Farmer Choice Awards?
FOAF Choice Awards invite the public to help select farmer projects to receive grant funding through a voting process. Here are the details about the video tutorial and the voting process.
What is Love for Farmers?
Love for Farmers provides an opportunity to share messages of gratitude that remind farmers their work is valued. Farmers and non-farmers love to send postcards.
What are farmer wish lists?
Some farmers share wish lists (over 100 of them) of specific items that help their farms operate more efficiently. You can make a wish list or see other farmers' wish lists here.
