The Farm

The Moon Farm is a small, diversified farm in North Georgia focused on naturally grown vegetables and cut flowers. We farm with intention—prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, and flavor over shortcuts—using sustainable practices to produce fresh, seasonal food for our local community. Rooted in care for the land, we grow food the way it should be grown: thoughtfully, transparently, and close to home.

The Project Funded

This grant will support the construction and use of a small-scale biochar retort to convert on-farm woody waste into high-quality biochar. The project will reduce burn waste, sequester carbon, and improve soil health through increased water retention, nutrient holding capacity, and microbial activity. Biochar produced will be integrated into existing soil-building practices to strengthen long-term fertility, resilience, and sustainability of the farm’s production system.

Project Impact

This grant allows immediate construction of a biochar retort rather than delaying implementation another year, accelerating measurable benefits for both the farm and surrounding community. By converting local woody waste into stable soil carbon now, the project improves soil health, water retention, and crop resilience sooner—reducing inputs, increasing reliability of production, and strengthening local food security. The retort also serves as a practical demonstration of low-cost, climate-positive soil practices that can be shared with neighboring growers, multiplying the impact beyond the farm itself.
