Pluff Mudd Farm

Kelly and Dale Fort

South Carolina

The Farm

We are a small fiber farm in coastal South Carolina. We raise pygora goats and valais/cross sheep for protein fiber, flax for cellulose fiber, and indigo for dyeing. We also have mini donkeys and chickens. We are expanding our journey into natural dyes.

The Project Funded

Our grant was for a dehydrator and a laundry spinner. The dehydrator will dry indigo paste and dye stuffs into a powder for storage and packaging. The spinner will speed up the fleece drying time.

Project Impact

Using the dehydrator will speed up the process of drying indigo paste into a powder form. We use our oven which also uses our propane. Powdered indigo will be portioned and sold, which creates a new revenue stream. The spinner quickly dries fleeces. I process 18 fleeces by hand each year for classes and for sale, and I'm always behind! I'll have more material and energy for classes!
