The Farm
Since 2016, Bottomland Farm has been committed to raising the highest quality meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables. All of our animals are afforded the opportunity to express their essential nature: pigs root and wallow, chickens scratch and peck, and sheep and goats munch fresh grass daily. In turn, these pastured animals build our soil and add fertility to provide us clean food. As with our livestock, our fruits, vegetables and mushrooms are grown with farming practices that work in conjunction with nature, rather than working to suppress it.
The Project Funded
We'll use the For Farmers Grant to purchase an additional range feeder for our flock of pasture-based laying hens in order to provide them with the appropriate amount of feeder space and an endless supply of layer feed.
Project Impact
For the past several years we have been working to increase our pasture-raised egg production to better meet market demand. Because of the investment required to double production (additional chicken housing, feeder space, electric netting, etc), it's been a very slow process. A year and a half ago we crowdfunded a loan to add an additional mobile chicken coop, but didn't quite have the funds for another range feeder. We'll now add an additional range feeder to our production, which will increase feeder space for our birds, allowing them to access more of the specially formulated layer feed in order to better fuel their egg production. We will see an increase in the health of our birds and our customers will see even more pasture-raised eggs at market.
